Les Misérables isn’t that Miserable

297043_634984I love a good romantic comedy. A rom-com. Valentines day, Just Married, I love ‘em all. But I didn’t love Les Miserables, or as I will call it from now on, Les Mis. Not because it wasn’t a romantic comedy, it was funny and there was a love story in it somewhere, but because it just wasn’t good.

Les Mis is a story about a guy, I can’t remember his name so let’s call him Wolverine, who stole some bread. He was locked up for 19 years, released, went on the run for 5 years, turned into a mayor, went on the run for another 8 years and then died. It’s all very exciting.

The story was actually the best part of Les Mis. Slavey, redemption, love at first sight, all points of interest to myself. The only problem was I just couldn’t take it seriously. For every bit that could have made me feel something, they ruined it by speaking the lyrics to a song. Not a good song, just trying to talk in time of the music.

Some of the songs were just stupid. The opening song with the slaves singing LOOK DOWN, LOOK DOWN, just had me in stitches. I actually laughed at that for most of the way home. Yes, it was terrible when that girl died. Sorry, I can’t remember her name again so let’s call her Catwoman. And that may have been the best bit. I love when they sing songs that Glee have covered.

The main bad guy of the film was re-dick as well. What the hell was his problem? A man stole some bread over 25 years ago, LET IT GO MAN! It’s in the past, 25 years ago. He needs to get a life and stop being obsessed with him. Also, he needs to stop walking atop high buildings because I’m shocked that he hasn’t fallen off yet.

Les Mis was not my cup of tea at all. And I love musicals. If you liked it, great I’m happy for you. But it’s not for me. The brilliant actors and wonderful story where just ruined for me by what some people are calling the best bit: the constant need to sing. I’ll give it 3 out of 5 stars.
