After nearly two weeks of not even trying to read Lord of the Rings, I devoted Saturday and Sunday to finally return to ‘Return of the King’ and hopefully finish Lord of the Rings off, after starting the story over a month ago! I read volume 5 on Saturday, and volume 6 on Sunday and I liked it.
I know this sounds lame, but I was actually proud of myself when I finally finished. There is no doubt about it, Lord of the Rings is one of the hardest books that I’ve ever read. The first half of Two Tower, and the first half of Return of the King especially I really struggled to keep up, finding myself loosing interest, even falling to sleep, and having to reread full sections.
I can see why so many people give up, especially at the half way point. But what I can’t get my head round are the people who claim they love Lord of the Rings, but have never bothered to read the book! It’s weird to me, but it’s like the people who say they love Harry Potter, but have never read the books! You’re missing out on great books! I just don’t get it!
So far from this blog post, my love for Lord of the Rings isn’t coming across too well. Please don’t get me wrong though, I loved reading it. The story itself was great, and ditto for the characters. I wasn’t too keen on the huge battles, but the traveling, and the Sam/Frodo storyline was fab. I think the last half of Return of the King was my favourite, I loved the return of the Hobbits, and the rebuilding of the Shire and generally just the ending. Although a little bit confusing.
I’m going to come back to this in a later blog post this week (foreshadowing!) but when I finish a book, I also say “that book my favourite book ever, Harry Potter aside of causing, they sit in a league of their own”. I love Lord of the Rings, and I’m so excited to watching the Extended Editions of the movies this weekend!
